Training Course in Tropical Field Botany

The Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG), the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), and the Universidad Estatal Amazónica (UEA) are pleased to announce a 3-week training program in Tropical Field Botany in Ecuador for highly motivated early graduate students from American universities who are interested in pursuing a career in Plant Systematics.

University of Washington-Assistant Professor

The Biology Department at the University of Washington will be hiring multiple faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor. Open to all disciplines, but with an emphasis on ability to collaborate across fields. These hires will coincide with the opening of a new Biology building and greenhouse and will be an outstanding opportunity for plant-oriented applicants.

Mt. Cuba Center Graduate Fellowship in Eastern American Botany

Austin Peay State University’s Center of Excellence for Field Biology is pleased to offer a Graduate Research Assistantship to support a masters-level graduate student for two years to work in tandem with a second student (position already filled) on a taxonomic study of Clematis subgenus Viorna of eastern North America. This assistantship is made possible by funding from Delaware’s Mt. Cuba Center. 

Assistant Curator, Florida Museum of Natural History

The Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida, invites applications for an Assistant Curator (equivalent to Assistant Professor), a tenure-track position, who will serve as curator-in-charge of the Herbarium, including supervision of its staff. The successful candidate is expected to conduct a dynamic research program focused broadly on the evolutionary biology of plants.

Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Botany, or a closely related field, and demonstrate a record of research and publication focused on the evolution of any group(s) of plants. Candidates should also be willing to collaborate actively, although not exclusively, with the University of Florida’s diverse botanical research programs in the Florida Museum of Natural History, Department of Biology (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), and Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences. Candidates must be capable of leading, promoting, and utilizing an internationally recognized Herbarium (FLAS) that includes more than 465,000 specimens of vascular plants, bryophytes, algae, and moss.

The appointee is expected to teach and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Florida. Pursuit of external funding is expected. The anticipated start date is no later than August 16, 2018.

Joint BSA/ASPT award funds sustainability workshop in the Dominican Republic

The 2017 Botany Advocacy Leadership Award provided funds for awardee Jackeline Salazar to hold a sustainability workshop for women on August 31st, 2017, in Oviedo, Perdenales, Dominican Republic. The workshop was entitled "Plant Conservation and Sustainable Management by women in the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve, Dominican Republic: Community Workshop and Local Capacity” and was a great success!  

Hans Walter Lack Receives the 2017 ASPT Peter Raven Award

The American Society of Plant Taxonomists (ASPT) has awarded Hans Walter Lack the 2017 Peter Raven Award. Dr. Lack was based at the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem and served in the role as the Director of the Botanical Museum until his retirement in 2015. There Dr. Lack worked tirelessly in research and outreach. The award is named for Peter Raven, eminent botanist and President Emeritus of the Missouri Botanical Garden, and is awarded annually by the American Society of Plant Taxonomists to a plant systematist who has made exceptional efforts at outreach to non-scientists.  

Angela McDonnell Receives the 2017 ASPT George R. Cooley Award

The American Society of Plant Taxonomists (ASPT) has selected Angela McDonnell as its 2017 George R. Cooley Award recipient. Considered one of the most prestigious early-career recognitions in the plant sciences, the award is named for George R. Cooley, a successful banker who studied plants and worked in conservation in retirement.
