Position Title     Curatorial Assistant I: Georeferencing Technician (Herbarium)

Duration            Part-time position

Reports to          Herbarium Collections Manager

Basic Function   The Georeferencing Technician will assign geographic coordinates to digital herbarium collection records using a variety of mapping tools.


To support the national effort to predict, understand and monitor the effects of climate change, the Consortium of California Herbaria (CCH) is georeferencing >500,000 specimen records of California plants served online through the CCH web portal. A lead collaborator in this project, the herbarium of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden will georeference >100,000 specimens. The project is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1.     Converts locality description data into latitude and longitude (= georeferencing) using appropriate software and mapping tools as necessary.

2.     Verifies digital specimen records against the main preserved plant collection.

3.     Works with project leader to monitor data quality for records being georeferenced.

4.     Provides updates on progress at regular intervals.

 

Additional responsibilities may include assisting the RSA Collections Manager and Curatorial Assistants with herbarium operations and routine collections management, including preparation of plant specimens for inclusion in herbarium; specimen filing; record keeping activity associated with specimen databasing and accessioning. 


Additional Responsibilities:

1.     Captures data from herbarium specimen labels by keying data accurately into the RSA herbarium’s specimen database.

2.     Generates specimen labels using interactive, computer-based system as directed.

3.     Captures digital images of herbarium specimens using scanning and other technologies.

4.     Assists with mounting, repairing, and accessioning of herbarium specimens.

5.     Assists with filing recently mounted specimens and loan returns as directed.

6.     Assists with periodic inspection of herbarium collections for insect pests.

7.     Assists with special curatorial projects as directed.

8.     Assists with other appropriate aspects of herbarium and Garden operations as required.


Qualifications:

College graduate with a background in science preferred. Basic computer skills essential, including familiarity with databasing, file management, and mapping utilities. Must be able to type accurately and quickly. Knowledge of the geography of California highly desirable. Essential to have manual dexterity sufficient to prepare specimens neatly and quickly. Essential to have physical strength sufficient to safely lift and carry boxes of specimens and supplies (25-30+ lbs.). Must possess a strong ability to follow instructions and work successfully with other staff, students, and volunteers. Follows established safety procedures as outlined by Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden.
